We are seeking feedback from the community and key stakeholders on the new Animal Management Strategy and Action Plan!
Dogs are an important part of life for many Litchfield residents, they are much-loved companions, walking buddies and, sometimes, the boss of the household! 🐾
At the same time, everyone has the right to feel safe and enjoy their neighbourhood. The strategy looks at how Council can support responsible dog ownership, public safety, community amenity, education and fair enforcement.
What is Council responsible for?
Council’s animal management role is mainly focused on dogs, including issues such as:
- wandering and nuisance dogs
- menacing or dangerous behaviour
- responsible dog ownership
- education and community awareness
- enforcing Council’s dog management by-laws.
For other animals such as cats, poultry, livestock and wildlife, Council’s role is limited to providing information and referring matters to the appropriate authority.
The strategy aims to balance the needs of dog owners and non-dog owners alike, helping make Litchfield the “best place to live in the Top End.”
