Recycled batteries spark funds for community

Recycling efforts are seeing trash being turned into cash to give back to the community via the new Litchfield Council Community Grants Scheme launched today with the 2017 round opening.

Old car batteries and drink cans are the foundation of the Community Grants Scheme allowing community organisations to apply for funding up to $5,000 for initiatives that positively contribute to health and wellbeing and individuals up to $500 to assist with fundraising and representative activities.

Litchfield Council Mayor Maree Bredhauer said the Community Grants Scheme was a new initiative from Council where recycling is giving back to the community.

“This initiative is taking products that the community dispose of at the transfer stations, recycling them and distributing the proceeds to the community through an application process” the Mayor said.

There are three parts to the Scheme; Annual Community Grants, Community Initiative Grants and Council Partnership and Support Grants, all of which are providing the Litchfield community with financial support to make our region a great place to live.

Applications for the inaugural annual community grants 2017 round close midnight Sunday 30 April 2017 and applications for the community initiatives grants can be made any time throughout the year.

Applications will be assessed by a Community Grants Committee, including two of Councils elected members.

All applicants for the annual community grants will be invited to attend an awards ceremony with the successful applications being announced at the ceremony in June 2017.
