Pedestrian and vehicle safety have been the number one priority as Litchfield Council completes a project at Girraween Primary School in time for the 2019 school year.

The project jointly funded by Litchfield Council and NTG Department of Education included new line-marking, traffic and directional signs, creation of formal parking spaces and the development of a road safety flyer to assist communicating the new traffic arrangements to parents and children.

Litchfield Council Mayor Maree Bredhauer said Council and contractors worked hard over the school holidays to ensure the work was complete in time to ensure the safety of the children starting back at school.

“With 530 students and a very busy drop off and pick up period, Council and the School identified traffic conflict and pedestrian safety concerns last year. There were no parking spaces on the roads which meant cars were parking up on the nature strip with other cars waiting in no standing zones whilst children moved between cars and across the road to meet parents. We are really happy with the result, it has created a much safer environment” Mayor Bredhauer stated.

Girraween Primary School Principal Helen Chatto said the School has been working with students and their parents to help them understand the new traffic arrangements.

“The Girraween community are appreciative of the work undertaken by the Litchfield Council to support our families, we encourage all drivers to follow the road rules to keep our students safe” Helen said.
