Congratulations to our volunteer firefighters, who were recognised by the NT Government for their efforts to protect our community, as part of National Volunteer Week celebrations last week.

Thirteen of the 16 members recognised were from brigades based within the Litchfield municipality.

Land Resource Management Minister Willem Westra van Holthe presented the firies with their Bushfires NT Long and Meritorious Service Medals at a ceremony at Parliament House.

Those honoured from Litchfield municipality were:

  • Hek Shuker - Darwin River
  • Beverley Shuker - Darwin River
  • Karyn Jessop - Darwin River
  • Geoffrey Bamber - Darwin River
  • Barry Lemcke - Lambells Lagoon
  • Ken Griffin - Beatrice Hill
  • Valerie Griffin - Beatrice Hill
  • Dave Joyce (Captain) - Labasheeda Park
  • Gary Draper - Manton

Minister Westra van Holthe said the medals recognised 10 years service to fire management, supporting vounteer welfare, developing brigade infrastructure, and assisting brigade fundraising

“These are people who freely give up their own time and put their own lives on the line to make the lives of all Territorians safer; the effort of each and every one of these volunteers is vital to the successful operation of our Volunteer Bushfire Brigade,” Minister Westra van Holthe said.

There are more than 1,000 volunteers across 22 Bushfires NT Volunteer Brigades, all of whom work with Territory landholders to manage the fire threat on around 99 per cent of the NT land.
