Keeping roads safe; Council’s maintenance grading set to kick off

Litchfield Council will start grading unsealed roads across the council area next week as part of a program to keep its busy road network safe and efficient.

Maintenance grading will begin Wednesday October 1st with residents of Keleson Road in South Ward the first to benefit from the grading action.

The graders will be working throughout the region over a four week period, finishing up at Bees Creek Road. The work is being carried out by local contractor Hawkes Earthmoving, who has been grading local roads for more than 20 years.

Works will involve light formation grading on pavement and shoulders of unsealed roads, with watering and roller compaction.

Mayor Allan McKay said Litchfield Council is committed to providing safe and practical road solutions for the region’s residents.

“As the Litchfield area grows, so does the pressure on our roads and other infrastructure,” Mr McKay said. “There’s more cars and heavy vehicles using our roads than ever before and regular grading is important for road safety.”

Maintenance of unsealed roads is usually performed by grading, watering and compacting the road to bring it up to safe driving standards. This round of grading will help prepare Litchfield’s roads for the onset of the wet season.

Litchfield Council maintains the following roads:

• sealed 761.13 km 
• gravel 150.4 km
• formed 3.4 km
• unformed 25.3 km

Mr McKay said maintenance grading is a key service Council performs for the benefit of residents and the wider community.
