Restoration works at Leonino Road/Karen Kelly Crossing at Darwin River have now been successfully completed, following damage sustained during the wet season and as a result of Cyclone Fina.
Although the affected area covered only a short section of road and drainage infrastructure, the extent of the damage was significant. Floodwaters caused cracking and deterioration of the concrete pavement, erosion of drainage channels and embankments, exposure of guardrail footings, washout of road shoulders and damage to crossing signage.
Council engaged a contractor to undertake repair works including remediation of damaged concrete pavement, stabilisation of eroded batters and embankments, repair of drainage and washout areas, protection and reinstatement of guardrail foundations, and reinstatement of crossing signage, including reconstruction of the sign footings and re-erection of the existing signage.
Litchfield Council Mayor Rachael Wright said the works were critical in maintaining connectivity and strengthening the road network against future weather events.
“Leonino Road and Karen Kellys Crossing is an important link for our residents, and restoring this crossing was essential to ensure the safety of all road users.
“While the damaged section was relatively small, the severity of the impacts highlights just how powerful wet season and cyclone conditions can be. These repairs not only restore access but also improve the resilience of the crossing ahead of future wet seasons.”
“By investing in quality repairs now, we are helping to prevent further deterioration and reduce long-term maintenance costs for our community.”
Leonino Road/Karen Kelly Crossing is a key connector between Darwin River Road, Chibnall Road and the Stuart Highway, making its restoration a priority to ensure safe and reliable access for the community.
The completed works have reinstated the crossing’s structural integrity, improved safety for road users, and enhanced its resilience against future wet season impacts.
