Litchfield Council has awarded a local contractor the main component of the civil works, worth $1.9 million, to upgrade a major intersection in the rural area.

Following a rigorous tender process, H&K Earthmoving was chosen as the successful contractor to build a single-lane roundabout at the Girraween and Anglesey Roads intersection.

The Northern Territory family-owned company has operated in the Top End for the past 30 years and completed projects across Darwin’s rural area and the Top End region.

The road works project is expected to start at the beginning of May, with an estimated construction program of three months for completion.

Litchfield Council lobbied for Black Spot funding from the Federal Government to upgrade the intersection after several accidents at the site, including two fatal accidents.

The new single lane roundabout will improve safety at the intersection of Girraween and Anglesey Road by:

  • reducing the current conflict points and vehicle speeds in accordance to a national standard

  • upgrading the intersection to cater for the current and future traffic needs

  • providing an intersection that is appropriate with the existing alignment of Anglesey Road and Girraween Road.

The roundabout has been designed to allow for upgrades to cater for future increases in traffic due to the growing number of people moving to Girraween, Humpty Doo and Herbert, and other future developments.

The Council is consulting with local residents and other stakeholders to minimise the impact of the road works and will keep people updated on the progress of the project.

With road works due to begin soon, local residents need to plan ahead and start their journey at least 10 minutes earlier, if travelling through this intersection, or if their destination allows, motorists can seek an alternate route to avoid traffic delays.

Detours will be in place and traffic control will maintain traffic flow during peak periods.

The Council and contractor urge motorists to slow down when travelling through the area and obey all speed limits and traffic signage for the safety of other road users and construction workers on site during the three-month construction period.
